Prenuvo in Australia explained: what a $2,999 whole-body MRI finds, the evidence, costs and alternatives
Prenuvo, a US whole-body MRI company, has one Australian clinic, in Toorak, Melbourne. It lists two scans: a Whole Body Scan for $2,999 and a Head & Torso Scan for $1,799. Neither attracts a Medicare rebate, and every booking needs a practitioner's referral. Whole-body MRI does find cancers and other serious conditions in a small share of healthy people, but nearly everyone scanned has at least one finding, most of them harmless, and no study has shown that scanning healthy people this way helps them live longer.

BML's short verdict. Prenuvo sells a test whose value for healthy people is still unproven. The scan is long and radiation-free and covers most of the body, and in Prenuvo's own study about 1 in 45 people scanned turned out to have cancer, mostly early. But nearly everyone scanned has some finding, about 30% of people in published studies need further tests, and no trial has yet shown that whole-body screening helps people live longer. Australia's radiology college doesn't recommend it for people at low risk, and its president has said these scans are driven by marketing rather than clinical need. A clear scan also doesn't replace Australia's national screening programs.
- May suit people with money to spare who want a baseline, accept that it will probably turn up findings, and have a GP willing to refer them and follow up; and people worried about cancers that have no routine screening (kidney, pancreas, ovary), after talking it through with their GP. With a strong family history or a known gene variant (BRCA, CHEK2 and others), the right surveillance plan is one for your specialist to set, and this page can't say whether a Prenuvo scan fits it.
- Think twice if borderline findings would badly stress you, or you can't afford private follow-up tests; a clear scan would tempt you to skip BreastScreen, the bowel screening kit, cervical screening or lung screening (if eligible); you mainly want heart-risk information, since the scan doesn't show coronary plaque; or you mainly want body composition, where a DEXA-based assessment costs from $585 at MeasureUp and is included in Everlab's $1,199 Diagnostic tier.
How it works in Australia
- Book and pay. Choose a scan and a time at the Toorak clinic.
- Referral and pre-scan consultation. A practitioner reviews your booking at a consultation. If the scan is judged safe and appropriate, it's ordered; if not, the booking is cancelled and refunded minus the $270 consultation fee.
- Prepare. Fast for four hours beforehand (water, tea and black coffee are allowed).
- The scan. 60 minutes for the Whole Body Scan, 45 for the Head & Torso Scan. No radiation, no contrast injection.
- The report. A radiologist reads the images and signs the report. The Australian pages don't say where the radiologists are based.
- Results review. A Prenuvo provider walks you through the report.
- Follow-up. Prenuvo says you should share and discuss the results with your own doctor, so further tests and specialist referrals go through your GP.

Memberships may not apply here. Prenuvo's Australian "How it works" page also describes Core, Comprehensive and Executive memberships with blood panels, and mentions more than 26 locations. Those match Prenuvo's US offering. The Australian home page lists only the two scans above, with no memberships, blood tests or add-ons, and no prices for them. If you see a membership offered in Australia, ask Prenuvo what it includes.
What it can and can't see
| Good at (by Prenuvo's account and the research) | Not designed for |
|---|---|
| Solid-organ masses: kidney, liver, pancreas, ovary, bladder, thyroid | Breast screening: not a replacement for mammograms |
| Brain masses (Whole Body Scan) | Bowel screening: not a replacement for colonoscopy or the bowel screening kit |
| Spine and disc problems (Whole Body Scan only) | Detailed heart screening, including coronary plaque |
| Fatty liver, organ size and fat distribution | Detailed joint and tendon assessment |
| Changes over time, if you scan again | Lungs: commenters and screening programs point to low-dose CT, not MRI |
What the evidence shows, claim by claim
Whole-body MRI finds cancer in about 1 to 2 people in every 100 scanned, finds something in almost everyone, and hasn't yet been shown to help people live longer. These are separate questions, and the research answers them differently. None of the studies below was done in Australia.
1. How often does whole-body MRI find cancer in healthy people?
In roughly 1 to 2 in 100.
- 2020 reviewindependent
- 2025 meta-analysisindependent; 9,024 people
- Polaris, 2025Prenuvo's own; 1,011 people
- Independent meta-analysis (2025). University of Florida researchers pooled 10 studies of 9,024 people without symptoms and found a cancer detection rate of 1.57%. They concluded that current evidence doesn't support routine whole-body MRI in people without symptoms, citing low detection rates, inconsistent reporting and a lack of survival data (European Radiology, reported by Diagnostic Imaging, Sep 2025).
- Independent review (2020). Across 12 studies and 6,214 scans of people without symptoms, 1.1% of those with confirmed outcomes reported (41 of 3,692) had a cancer confirmed by tissue testing (Zugni et al., Cancer Imaging, 2020).
- Prenuvo's own study (Polaris, 2025). Of 1,011 mostly asymptomatic people scanned at one Canadian clinic, about 2.2% were diagnosed with biopsy-confirmed cancer, mostly early-stage. About half of the biopsies the scans led to found cancer. Among people with a clear scan, 99.8% stayed cancer-free for at least a year; the cancers missed were breast cancers. The results were presented at a conference in April 2025; we found no full journal publication as of 5 November 2026 (Radiology Business).
Prenuvo's own study is from one clinic and one year of follow-up, so its 2.2% may not hold for every buyer. Finding a cancer also isn't the same as changing its outcome: some slow-growing cancers found this way might never have caused harm. Prenuvo's Australian page says about 5% of its scans have helped detect a potentially life-saving condition, based on its internal data.
2. How often does it find something else?
Almost always.
- Any abnormal finding
- Needed further evaluation
- Cancer suspected
- Cancer confirmed
From Zugni et al., 2020, whose denominators differ by row because not every study reported every measure. Of nearly 18,000 individual findings, 91% were benign or not clinically relevant.
In Australia the follow-up usually means a GP visit, then a referral for targeted imaging or a specialist, sometimes privately. Australia's radiology college has warned that follow-up for harmless incidental findings adds load to the public system (AusDoc, Dec 2025). Follow-up costs aren't included in Prenuvo's price.
3. Does it help people live longer?
Not shown. No randomised trial has tested whether whole-body MRI screening of healthy people reduces deaths.
- RANZCR, the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists, doesn't recommend whole-body MRI screening for asymptomatic, low-risk people. Its position statement excludes people with a previous cancer or a cancer predisposition syndrome (RANZCR position statement, page dated 20 May 2026).
- RANZCR's president, Clinical Professor John Slavotinek, said this is "driven by commercial interests and marketing, not clinical need", and the college says the scans offer less detail than targeted MRI (AusDoc, Dec 2025).
- The American College of Radiology takes a similar position (ACR, Apr 2023).
Prenuvo's case is that its scan covers organs with no screening at all, so comparing it with single-cancer tests is the wrong comparison (Prenuvo white paper). It is sponsoring a 10-year study of up to 100,000 people in the US, registered as NCT06212479, which will track diagnoses and outcomes. Results are years away (ITN, Jun 2024).
Whole-body MRI does have an established use for people with Li-Fraumeni syndrome (a TP53 gene change), where regular scans are recommended. That's the only group Medicare covers whole-body MRI for, under MBS item 63564 (Vively, Oct 2026).
4. Can a clear scan miss things?
Yes. Prenuvo's Australian page says its scans don't include detailed heart or breast screening and don't replace other tests or regular doctor visits. In its own study, the cancers missed were breast cancers.
In the US, Prenuvo faces a malpractice suit filed in New York in 2024. The plaintiff alleges a radiologist didn't flag a narrowed brain artery before he had a stroke. Prenuvo has denied the allegations in court filings, and the claims haven't been decided as far as we could find (Ars Technica, Jan 2026; Radiology Business). A few customers online also say findings were missed. None of this can be verified, but it's a reminder that a scan is read at one point in time, without a doctor who knows you in the room.
Evidence summary
| Claim | Best evidence | Independent? | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whole-body MRI finds cancer in some healthy people | 2025 meta-analysis (1.57%); 2020 review (1.1%); Prenuvo's Polaris (2.2%) | Yes, plus company data | High that it finds some |
| Most findings are benign but some need follow-up | 2020 review: about 94% have a finding, about 30% need further evaluation | Yes | High |
| Screening healthy people this way improves survival | No trial; RANZCR and ACR don't recommend it | Yes | Not demonstrated |
| A clear Prenuvo scan rules out serious disease | Prenuvo's own exclusions; missed breast cancers in Polaris | Partly | Not supported |
| Prenuvo extends life | None found | — | Not established |
"None found" means we couldn't find published evidence as of 5 November 2026, not that the claim is false.
What it really costs
One Whole Body Scan costs $2,999. Scanned every year, it costs $14,995 over five years, before any follow-up. Figures are Australian dollars at today's list prices, assuming prices don't change. The rows cover different things, so a cheaper row isn't an equivalent service.
- Prenuvo Head & Torsono detailed spine
- OneMRIhead to upper thigh
- Whole Body MRI, ClarityGold Coast; with low-dose chest CT
- Prenuvo Whole Body
| Scan | Year 1 | 3 years (yearly scans) | 5 years (yearly scans) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prenuvo Head & Torso Scan (no detailed spine) | $1,799 | $5,397 | $8,995 |
| Prenuvo Whole Body Scan | $2,999 | $8,997 | $14,995 |
| For comparison: OneMRI Whole Body MRI | $2,990 | $8,970 | $14,950 |
| For comparison: Whole Body MRI (Gold Coast), Clarity | $2,995 | $8,985 | $14,975 |
Not included above:
- A GP visit for the referral (may attract a Medicare rebate, depending on your GP)
- Follow-up imaging, specialist visits and biopsies from findings. With a GP referral, some follow-up imaging attracts a Medicare rebate; private gaps vary
- Travel to Melbourne if you live elsewhere
Is the $270 consultation extra? Prenuvo's pages don't say clearly. Its cancellation wording describes the consultation as part of the scan price: if your scan is judged unsuitable, Prenuvo keeps $270 and refunds the rest. But that same wording refers to a "$3,499 AUD scan" and a $3,229 refund, which don't match the listed $2,999. A Reddit commenter quoted $3,499 when the Melbourne clinic opened, so it may be a leftover launch price. Confirm the total with Prenuvo before booking.
Medicare, private health and financing. Neither scan attracts a Medicare rebate. Prenuvo's Australian terms make no guarantee of Medicare or private health funding. Its pages mention "financing partners" where available, and link to Affirm's lending terms, without confirming an Australian lender.

What people say
We have no Australian-specific customer reviews to code yet. The public feedback we coded is mostly from people describing Prenuvo's US clinics, so experience in Toorak may differ.
Reddit. Across three threads from 2025 to 2026, 18 people said they'd had a Prenuvo scan. A small, selected sample, not a satisfaction rate.
- Positive
- Mixed
- Negative
- No overall view
- Positive accounts were mostly brief: a clear result and peace of mind. One customer said their husband's scan found an early, operable pancreatic cancer.
- The most common complaints were findings later ruled out by follow-up tests (a suspected brain aneurysm, a pancreatic cyst), findings people say were missed, and images less detailed than a targeted MRI.
- Several said the add-ons sold in the US weren't worth it. Those add-ons aren't priced on Prenuvo's Australian home page.
Trustpilot. 13 reviews for prenuvo.com, 2.4 out of 5, on an unclaimed profile, checked 5 November 2026 (Trustpilot). That rests on a very small, self-selected sample and isn't a reliable guide to overall satisfaction.
Before you book: checklist
- Ask your GP whether they'll refer you, review the report and arrange follow-up
- Check you're up to date with national screening for your age
- Ask Prenuvo whether the $270 consultation is included in the $2,999, and how long results take
- Check your metal implants and devices with Prenuvo before paying
- Note the 72-hour cancellation cutoff
- Set money aside for follow-up tests
National screening it doesn't replace
| Program | Who | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| BreastScreen Australia | Women 50–74 invited every two years; eligible from 40 | Free |
| National Bowel Cancer Screening Program | 45–74, home test kit every two years | Free |
| National Cervical Screening Program | Women and people with a cervix, 25–74, every five years | Through your healthcare provider; ask about fees |
| National Lung Cancer Screening Program | 50–70, no symptoms, smoke or quit in the last 10 years, at least 30 pack-years; needs a referral | Free low-dose CT; the referral visit may cost |
| Heart Health Check | GP check of five-year heart attack and stroke risk | Medicare-covered; free where bulk-billed |
On heart scans. A coronary artery calcium score is a CT scan that measures calcified plaque. The Heart Foundation says it isn't covered by Medicare, that your doctor may refer you for one after a Heart Health Check, and that not everyone needs it. A funding application (MSAC 1815) recommends a fee of about $170, and radiology bodies estimate it costs $200–$220 to provide (The Limbic, Aug 2026).

How to choose.
- A whole-body MRI from a large international provider, and you can get to Melbourne? Prenuvo.
- A whole-body MRI at a similar price closer to home? Compare OneMRI and Whole Body MRI on coverage, who reads the scan and what follow-up you get, not price alone. No study we found compares their accuracy.
- Thinking about heart disease? The Heart Foundation describes a Heart Health Check with your GP, with a calcium score as a possible add-on.
- Behind on the free screening your age calls for? That screening is cheaper and better proven. Your GP can say what's due.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Prenuvo cost in Australia?
$2,999 for the Whole Body Scan and $1,799 for the Head & Torso Scan. Prenuvo's pages also mention a $270 pre-scan consultation, so confirm the total before booking.
Does Medicare cover Prenuvo?
No. Prenuvo says neither scan is eligible for a Medicare rebate. Medicare covers whole-body MRI only for people with Li-Fraumeni syndrome (a TP53 gene change).
Does private health insurance cover it?
Prenuvo's terms make no guarantee that its services are eligible for Medicare or private health insurance funding. Ask your fund.
Do I need a referral?
Yes. Prenuvo says all bookings are subject to a referral from an appropriate healthcare practitioner.
Where is Prenuvo in Australia?
505 Toorak Road, Toorak, Melbourne. Its Australian site didn't mention a Sydney clinic when we checked on 5 November 2026.
Is Prenuvo worth it?
For a healthy person, that is unproven. Whole-body MRI finds cancer in about 1 to 2 people in 100 and something in nearly everyone, and no trial shows it helps people live longer. Australia's radiology college doesn't recommend it for people at low risk.
Does Prenuvo use radiation or contrast?
Neither.
Can Prenuvo replace a mammogram or bowel screening?
No. Prenuvo's Australian page says its scans don't replace other tests or regular doctor visits.
How long do results take?
Prenuvo's Australian pages don't say. Its global FAQ says generally within 5 business days, which we couldn't confirm for Australia.
What are the alternatives?
OneMRI ($2,990) and Whole Body MRI on the Gold Coast (from $2,995) also sell whole-body MRI; HealthScreen ($3,500) includes targeted MRI in a broader assessment.
How we researched this, sources and updates
Method. We reviewed Prenuvo's Australian pages and terms, published research on whole-body MRI in people without symptoms, RANZCR's position statement page and its president's comments, Australian screening program information, our Australian provider data, and public customer comments on Reddit and Trustpilot. Manufacturer claims are treated as unverified until independently tested. BML didn't have a scan and didn't contact Prenuvo for this version. This page was drafted with Claude, an AI tool, and checked against the sources below. No brand pays to be listed or for its position.
How we coded owner feedback. Each unique Reddit author who said they'd had a Prenuvo scan, coded positive, mixed, negative or no overall view from their own account. Clinicians, staff and people describing someone else's scan were excluded. This is our reading of their account, not a verified assessment.
Not medical advice. Nothing here is a recommendation for your health. Whether a scan makes sense for you, and what to do about any result, is a question for your GP.
