Most of this site applies to everyone. This page covers what changes around menopause (bone, heart, sleep and hormones), where to find care in Australia, and what the evidence says about the products sold for it.

Checked 14 Oct 2026Three facts from Australian health bodies, and where each one leads on this site.
Jean Hailes for Women's Health: "You have reached menopause if you haven't had a period for 12 months." The years before that are perimenopause.
Jean Hailes, checked 14 Oct 2026.
Hormone testsUnder MBS item 12320, people 70 and over who haven't had one can have a Medicare-funded scan, repeated every 5 years, or every 2 years (item 12322) if the result is lower. Younger people can qualify after a minimal-trauma fracture or with certain conditions.
MBS factsheet, items in place since 1 Nov 2017.
Bone and muscleThe AIHW reports dementia as the leading cause of death for females in 2024; coronary heart disease remains the leading cause for males.

Why there's no clinic price table here. Australian law restricts advertising prescription medicines to the public. The TGA says that promoting a telehealth service as a way to get particular prescription medicines is likely to be prohibited advertising. So on this site we don't list or compare services by the treatments they prescribe. TGA guidance, checked 14 Oct 2026.
Treatment options for menopause symptoms, including prescription options, are a conversation to have with a doctor.
Jean Hailes says that if you're in the expected age range for menopause (45 to 55), "it is not usual for a doctor to measure your hormone levels" to diagnose perimenopause; your doctor assesses your symptoms and changes to your periods. Blood tests may still be used to check your overall health or rule out other causes. On home kits, Jean Hailes is direct: blood or saliva tests sold to diagnose perimenopause are not recommended.
Jean Hailes, checked 14 Oct 2026.
If you're under 45 and your periods have changed, Jean Hailes says your doctor will probably measure your hormone levels. Our testing comparison checks each blood test against 8 core markers, one of which is a hormone panel.
Medicare bone density scans. From age 70, a bone density scan is Medicare-funded (see above). Below 70, Medicare funding depends on a fracture or a qualifying condition, which your GP can advise on.
Two kinds of DEXA scan. Private body-composition DEXA scans measure your whole body and often report a total-body bone density figure. Osteoporosis is diagnosed from the spine, hip or forearm. Writing in the Medical Journal of Australia, Pocock and Chen note that the WHO osteoporosis criterion applies to those sites "but does not apply to total body BMD."
Med J Aust 2014;201(7):382–383, published 2014.
So a whole-body scan tracks muscle and fat over time; it isn't the scan used to diagnose osteoporosis.

Checked 3 Nov 2026In 2023, The Menopause Society (North America) reviewed non-hormone options for hot flushes and night sweats. It recommended no supplement or herbal remedy. Here's what it found for the ingredients most often sold for menopause. All are rated "not recommended"; the level is the statement's own (I: good and consistent evidence; II: limited or inconsistent; III: expert opinion).
| Ingredient | What the statement found | Level |
|---|---|---|
| Some positive trials, judged too limited | ||
| Soy isoflavones and equol | Mixed results from widely varying studies. Only about 35% of North American women can turn soy into equol. | II |
| Pollen extract | One trial of 53 women found fewer hot flushes than placebo. Not recommended on expert opinion and limited research. | III |
| Rhapontic rhubarb (ERr 731) | Reported improvement, but only 7 of 55 women on placebo finished the main trial. | II |
| Omega-3 | Two trials: one positive, one with no difference from placebo. | III |
| Maca, chasteberry, milk thistle | Small or single studies, or tested only in combinations. | II |
| No better than placebo | ||
| Black cohosh | A 2012 Cochrane review of 16 trials (2,027 women) found no difference from placebo in hot-flush frequency. The statement notes reports of possible liver problems. | I |
| Ginseng | No benefit for hot flushes in several trials. | I |
| Dong quai | No difference from placebo after 24 weeks; the statement lists safety concerns. | II |
| Evening primrose oil | One trial; no benefit over placebo. | II |
| Wild yam creams | No benefit found, and tested creams have been found to contain undisclosed steroid hormones. | II |
The review covers hot flushes and night sweats only. Ashwagandha, bacopa and pine bark extract, common in newer products, weren't assessed.
In Australia, most supplements are listed medicines: an AUST L number shows a product is on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods, but listed medicines aren't evaluated for effectiveness before sale. General supplements (vitamin D, magnesium, omega-3 and more) are graded on our supplement evidence page.

Australian law restricts advertising prescription medicines to the public, and the TGA treats promoting a telehealth service as a way to get particular prescription medicines as likely prohibited advertising.
